Baby Sign Language might be a bit of a misnomer, as there is no grammatical structure behind it. Instead, Baby Sign is more of a bridge between the pre-linguistic experiences of infants and their immediate environment than a real language in and of itself. Jann Fujimoto, a speech-language pathologist, accurately described Baby Sign as “…not [being] a technical sign language such as ASL or BSL.” Baby Sign should thus be seen more as an early skill to develop by babies so that they can express themselves when verbal language has yet to come and understand the names for simple objects even before they are able to speak them.
